Comparing Our Used Sedan and Coupe Models

What is the Difference Between a Sedan and Coupe?

When shopping for a used car, it can be difficult to tell the difference between a sedan and a coupe. The two styles look similar, but there are differences that may have you leaning one way or the other. Most car manufacturers have crafted a sedan and/or coupe model, so there are many to choose from throughout the years. This blog will go over some of the similarities and differences when it comes to sedans and coupes so that you are prepared for when you go shopping for your next used model.

Similarities & Differences Between a Sedan and a Coupe

Body Style

At a quick glance, a sedan and a coupe from the same year and manufacturer may look the same, but there is a difference in the body style. Traditionally, a sedan has four doors and a trunk while a coupe only has two doors and a trunk. The trunk is usually separate from the interior on both vehicles. Both have a three-box design—the passenger cabin, trunk, and engine bay are separate from one another— but the coupe will often have a fixed roof as well.

With a coupe, the only way to get into the rear row is to move either the driver or passenger seat forward. The sedan is more accessible since passengers can use the two rear doors to access the vehicle. The sedan is often more favorable since it is user friendly.

Exterior Design

While some sedans and coupes look the same except for the number of doors available, in the past some manufacturers have designed the coupe version to look sportier than its counterpart. You can see this with the Dodge Challenger and Chevrolet Camaro. This also allows manufacturers to vary the pricing between their sedan and coupe models.

Pricing

Because of the sportier exterior design on coupe models, some people are willing to pay more money to have that vehicle as opposed to the sedan version. When it comes to used sedans and coupes, the price is already lower than its new price because of the depreciation. The moment the new vehicle leaves the dealership lot the value depreciates. So, a used coupe can often be found closer to the price of a used sedan, depending on the make and model.
